I’m going to assume you don’t need me to remind you that you can usually lace up those sneakers and go on a run while on vacation if that’s your thing. I honestly have a hard time running routes I’ve never been on before, so I put together a list of workouts that I can do without packing my entire home gym. You might also notice that none of these workouts are terribly long, either. I’d prefer to spend my vacation time with my loved ones, so I try to get in a quick workout in the morning to feel like my best version of myself and then just not worry about it while I celebrate or play or relax. If you’ve been on the healthy lifestyle train for any length of time, you’re likely familiar with the tiny little wrench that travel throws into your best-laid plans. Perhaps the most notorious among them is the quintessential and all-American road trip. And hey, there are some foods and events that are the very reason for the word balance, but it can be so easy to get totally derailed and spend an entire vacation on an endless sugar crash. This week has become filled suddenly with dinners out at our wedding venue, re-testing a few recipes from last week before they go up on the blog, and a family vacation over Labor Day weekend to the Oregon Coast. Work in my lab has picked up a bit as well, so I’m heading to the rental house a few days after my fiancé.
I put up a travel guide to Oceanside and the Oregon Coast last year, and I’m hoping that this trip will be just as rejuvenating. I’m lucky that Mr Never Cooks has a wonderful extended family who in fact do love to cook, drink some good wine, and play a few games of Spades long into the night.
One struggle I know many of my friends in the wellness world have is striking a balance with food and fitness that makes them happiest on vacations. Instead of a menu plan this week, I thought I might share some of the tips I use to maintain my health without ruining the whole idea of a vacation in the first place.
1. Begin at the End
Okay so that was a little confusing. What I mean is that you need to have a solid plan for after your vacation is over. I don’t mean a crash diet, a juice cleanse, or a punishing gym session. Continue reading
Alright friends, I’m ready to bring you the stunning finale of this epic saga detailing the odyssey of Julianne & Lindsey on the high…ridgetops. BUT FIRST. I need to make an addendum to day 2. Right a wrong, really. Correct a glaring error. Un-omit a stunning omission. Something that happened on day 2 that I did not include on Day 2.
Welcome back for the continuing tale of two women (ahem, badass babes) taking on the wilderness and coming out the other side feeling pretty darn invincible. If you’re interested, my first two posts on this covered how to plan and pack and the first day of our adventures. Continue reading
Hello and welcome to the day one recap of our epic backpacking saga! If you missed my first post on prepping for our trip, my good friend Julianne & I set off this last weekend on an adventure to push our limits and really explore the beauty of Oregon. Many of these photos are courtesy of her far more artistic eye.
The first day we set out early, which was an excellent idea given the miles we had in front of us, and we knew that we were ‘front-loading’ with our hardest day first. The pros: we had the most energy and mental fortitude; the cons: our packs were at their heaviest and we were still figuring out the best way to distribute the weight on our hips and shoulders. It’s the longest day of the year, friends! It’s also the perfect time to stay up well past your bedtime (mostly because the sun hasn’t even set yet if you go to sleep at 9 like my granny self) and dream up your ‘Summer Bucket List.’ This year I’m really trying to prioritize experiences over things in all areas of my life. I’ve been on a Minimalist kick, and I’m really enjoying the memories I’m creating. Continue reading
I’ve been lucky enough to call the Pacific Northwest my home for almost a decade now, and the beauty of this place still takes my breath away every time I venture out to the woods to enjoy nature.
One item that had been sitting on my bucket list for years was to tackle a tough backpacking trip, one that was both challenging and rewarding. One of my closest friends, Julianne (who took half of these photos), is heading off to graduate school and had the same pre-move goal. And thus our plan was born! Continue reading
